The Only Choice in Unawatuna

Most villas make you choose between the aesthetic and the atmosphere, wellness or good food. Kirala House doesn't ask you to compromise. Morning yoga on the terrace, sleeping in, a Negroni by the pool. Most likely all three. We are a private villa 10 minutes from Unawatuna Beach, with good food, a great location and a team that makes you feel genuinely looked after.

Stay in the Heart of Unawatuna

Close to the beach and Galle Fort, but set back far enough from the noise to feel like a private escape. Everything worth exploring is within reach.

Beaches, Temples, Viewpoints

Β

Unawatuna’s crescent main beach is a short drive away from Kirala House. Quieter spots like Mihiripenna and Dalawella are a little further along and are ideal for a peaceful swim.Β Perched above the bay, the Japanese Peace Pagoda on Rumassala Hill offers a serene temple experience and panoramic views of the coastline.

Things To Do in Unawatuna

Β

Mornings are best in the water – swimming, snorkelling or surfing – before settling into a beachfront cafΓ© for coffee or a king coconut. Galle Fort is 10–15 minutes by tuk-tuk. For longer day trips, Koggala, Mirissa and Udawalawe National Park are all manageable from here.

Explore the Galle Fort

Β

Galle Fort sits about 6 km from Unawatuna, just a 10–15 minute drive by tuk‑tuk or taxi. This makes it easy to spend a day exploring the colonial streets, ramparts and boutique cafΓ©s of Galle Fort and still return to the relaxed, beachside atmosphere of Kirala House in the evening.

Accessibility & Transport

Β

From Colombo, it’s a typical drive time of around 2 hours (depending on traffic). Many guests choose a private transfer, taxi or pre‑booked car service, which is comfortable and drops you directly at the villa. Upon request this can be organised.

A quiet and calm place. The rooms were spacious with clean washrooms. If you are walking barefoot the rooms were bit slippery. But we had the most amazing time! Shout-out to Hirusha and Nimasha for taking care of us and making us meals early morning so that we are on time for our diving lessons.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Kirala House have a pool?

Yes. Kirala House has a full outdoor swimming pool within the garden, available to all guests. It is open seasonally and is one of the most frequently mentioned highlights in guest reviews.

Yes to both. Family rooms are specifically designed for guests with children. For larger groups, the entire villa can be booked on exclusive rent, giving sole use of all rooms, the pool, garden, terrace and dining facilities. Extra beds are available on request.

Kirala House is within a ten-minute drive of Unawatuna Beach. The beach is easily accessible by tuk-tuk - the standard local transport, cheap and reliable.

Most villas in Galle Fort are small boutique properties inside the Fort walls - atmospheric, but typically without pools, limited in space, and better suited to couples. Kirala House sits six kilometres from the Fort in a garden setting, with a full pool, eight bedrooms, an on-site restaurant and spa facilities.

By the consistent account of guests who have compared it directly to other properties in the area, yes. Spacious rooms, on-site facilities, good food, an attentive team and a location within easy reach of both the beach and neighbouring coastal cities, put Kirala House at the upper end of the Galle district villa market on a value-for-quality basis.

Yes. Daily yoga and wellness sessions are available at the property. The garden and terrace provide the right spaces for morning practice. Yoga is offered as an option, not a requirement. It fits into a stay at Kirala House without defining the entire experience.

Travel Tips for Your
Unawatuna Stay

Best Season

November to April is the primary south coast season. Dry, sunny, and the conditions that make a pool stay feel earned. May to October brings the southwest monsoon, with lower rates and quieter beaches. Still very much a workable holiday if you are comfortable with occasional heavy rain.

Getting Around

Tuk-tuks are cheap, reliable and the correct way to cover distances under 10km. Uber and PickMe both operate in the area. For national parks and longer day trips, the team at Kirala House can help arrange private drivers.
